PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend an apparatus life by preventing the occurrence of reading errors caused by ink staining in an inkjet recorder which uses an optical linear encoder scale. SOLUTION: The linear encoder scale 10 is hung in a carriage scanning range by a feeding mechanism and a winding mechanism outside the carriage scanning range. When the linear encoder scale is wound by the winding mechanism, a carriage 1 is stopped on the side adjacent to the feeding mechanism to detect a movement distance of the linear encoder scale by an optical sensor, whereby a winding amount of the linear encoder scale is specified, and the encoder scale of a part read by the optical sensor is changed. Moreover, when the reading error of the encoder occurs or when an accumulated ink delivering amount or an accumulated printing number of sheets reaches a regulation value, a judgment to execute the winding operation for the encoder scale is performed.
