PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an invader watching method and apparatus which prevents false alarm due to external lights to detect the intruder by a simple processing. SOLUTION: A stereo camera 1 composed of two cameras 1a, 1b takes pictures of an intruder into a watching object range. A right-left difference picture calculator 4 takes the difference between the right and left pictures taken by the stereo camera 1 to obtain a right and left difference picture. An intruder picture operational unit 5 takes the difference between the right-left difference picture and a predetermined set background picture to extract an intruder picture. The set background picture is a right-left background difference picture between the right background picture of the right picture and the left background picture of the left picture. An intruder decision unit 8 decides an image as the intruder, if the region of a two-valued intruder picture converted from the intruder picture is greater than a threshold.
