PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of partially setting a copy inhibit region to a page of a read original. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus for reading an original image and outputting read image data includes a design pattern recognition means for recognizing a prescribed design pattern, and when the design pattern recognition means recognizes an image region to which the design pattern is attached during image reading, the image processing is applied to contents of the read image data of the image region into an illegible state and the read image data after being subjected to the image processing are output.
