PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for authentication, by which a personal identification number is prevented from being known by a person standing behind from hand motions when the personal identification number is inputted. SOLUTION: An authentication control part 108 makes inquiries about the personal identification number registered corresponding to an ID card to a data base of a host computer. One or more numbers to be additional numbers are generated at random in an additional number generation part 106, positions for adding the additional numbers to the personal identification number are determined at random to generate an authentication number. A display processing part 104 shows an input method of the authentication number to an authenticated person via a display device 101 and a number collation part 107 collates the number input by an input device 102 with the authentication number to perform authentication judgment. After that. the host computer side is notified of an authentication result by an ATM interface 109 by an authentication control part 108 and authentication is terminated.
