PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor device with its detection area adjustable by a simpler structure than before and a self-advancing robot with its obstacle detection area adjustable by a simpler structure than before. SOLUTION: This sensor device is equipped with a transmission element 10 for transmitting a compressional wave, a reception element 30 for receiving the compressional wave transmitted from the transmission element 10 and reflected by an object Ob while converting the received compressional wave into a reception signal which is an electric signal, and a signal processing part 50 for detecting the object b by using the reception signal output from the reception element 30. The transmission element 10 is made up of a sound generation element for generating a compressional wave by giving a thermal shock to air by means of a temperature change in a heat generation part accompanying the passage of an electric current through the generation part. Further, with the pulse width variable of a drive input waveform passed through the generation part of the transmission element 10, this sensor device is equipped with a transmission control part 20 capable of controlling the directionality of a compressional wave generated from the transmission element 10 by controlling the pulse width.
