[Also in Division B2] A solution in an organic solvent contains (A) an interpolymer comprising 2 to 50% by weight of an amide of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, at least some of the amido hydrogen atoms in the interpolymer being replaced by the structure wherein R is hydrogen or a furyl, aromatic or saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of up to 10 carbon atoms and R 1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl radical of up to 10 carbon atoms and (B) an interpolymer containing 2 to 50% of maleic anhydride or a substituted maleic anhydride, the anhydride groups thereof being partially esterified with a monohydric aliphatic organic compound to an extent of 50 to 150% half-esterification and at least 20% of the secondary carboxyl groups formed by half-esterification being esterified with a monoepoxide to form a hydroxy ester group; the weight ratio of (A): (B) is from 95: 5 to 5: 95. Interpolymer (A) is derived from, e.g., acrylamide, methacrylamide, itaconic diamide, maleic or fumaric diamide, muconic acid diamide or sorbic acid diamide copolymerized with another ethylenically unsaturated monomer which may be an unsaturated polyester resin. The amido hydrogen atoms are converted to a grouping by reaction with an aldehyde, if desired during copolymerization. The aldehyde-modified interpolymer may then be etherified. These modified interpolymers are produced as described in Specification 989,470. Interpolymers (B) are described in Specification 1,054,074, the preferred copolymer being of maleic anhydride with styrene, vinyl toluene, and methyl methacrylate and an alkyl acrylate. The anhydride groups are half-esterified with, e.g., butanol and the resulting carboxyl groups esterified with, e.g., ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, styrene oxide or phenyl glycidyl ether. In the examples, interpolymer (A) is prepared by reacting acrylamide, styrene, ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and a polyester derived from dehydrated castor oil fatty acids, crotonic acid, glycerine, isophthalic acid, phthalic anhydride, azelaic acid and 1,1<SP>1</SP> -isopropylidene - bis - (p - phenyleneoxy) - di - 2 - propanol in solution in xylol and butanol using azobisisobutyronitrile, di-tertiary butyl peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide as catalysts and tertiary dodecyl mercaptan as modifier. Paraformaldehyde is included to modify the amido groups. Interpolymer (B) is prepared by polymerizing maleic anhydride, vinyl toluene and ethyl acrylate in an aromatic hydrocarbon and xylol medium using di-tertiary butyl peroxide and benzoyl peroxide as catalysts and thereafter esterifying the anhydride groups with n-butyl alcohol. The resulting carboxylic acid groups are esterified with propylene oxide or phenyl glycidyl ether and phosphoric acid and butanol are added to the product. Solutions of interpolymers (A) and (B) are mixed with TiO 2 and applied to metal surfaces (see Division B2).</p>
