<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy saving and environmental friendly method for separating lignin from woody biomass without using a necessary chemical, etc., of wastewater treatment. <P>SOLUTION: The pulverized woody biomass is dispersed in water and the resultant suspension is exposed to ultrasonic waves to thereby dissolve the lignin in the biomass in water and extract the lignin. The water-soluble lignin can readily be separated from the woody biomass by the method.
