<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate sorting of a plurality of collected recording sheets by the same image recorded thereon. <P>SOLUTION: The printer comprises an assigning section, an image compounding section, and a buffer memory, etc. When an index processing mode is selected, the assigning section assigns pattern data to job data. Print image data, and the like, are analyzed from the job data and the print image data and the pattern data are compounded at the image compounding section. New print image data generated by compounding are developed in the buffer memory. A print engine performs printing based on a print image developed in the buffer memory and a pattern 40 is printed at the edge of a print sheet. Since a pattern 40 different for each job is recorded at the edge of the print sheet, a line is formed at a position on the side face of a recording sheet bundle different for each job.
