PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display apparatus capable of enhancing effects of cooling the spherical part of a light emitting tube more than in a conventional manner. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal rear projector apparatus related to this invention includes: a lamp unit 4 as a light source; a cooling fan for cooling the lamp unit; and an optical apparatus for forming color image light by using the lamp unit 4 as a light source. The lamp unit 4 includes: the light emitting tube 42 as the light source; and a reflector 41 for reflecting the light emitted from the light emitting tube 42 toward the optical apparatus. In the reflector 41, an air guiding hole 44 for guiding the air discharged from the cooling fan into the reflector 41 is formed in a position adjacent to the spherical part 43 of the light emitting tube 42 while opening toward the apex part 43a of the spherical part 43 in the vertical direction, then, the air is blasted on the apex part 43a.
