PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve combustion stability as much as possible in an operation range in which a multiple stage reaction phenomenon occurs. SOLUTION: Ignition assist is executed at ignition timing CA1, CA2 at which at least one of cold flame reaction and hot flame reaction can be accelerated in a later half of compression stroke before top dead center in compression stroke in the operation range in which multiple stage reaction occurs. When compression self ignition operation is executed in HCCI operation mode, at least one of cold flame reaction and hot flame reaction is accelerated and compression self ignition operation is surly materialized in a predetermined low temperature (200-400°C) operation range.
