PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operation property of a vehicle by avoiding change of intake air quantity with excess response in a device controlling intake air quantity of an engine by continuously changing intake valve opening characteristics. SOLUTION: When acceleration demand of a driver is detected based on change quantityΔAPS of accelerator opening APS, target opening characteristics of an intake valve is dulled with a dulling coefficient according to the change quantityΔAPA. In the dulling process, response of the target opening characteristics is delayed more as the driver demands slower acceleration. Consequently, acceleration shock due to too sensitive response of engine torque to slight acceleration operation can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
