PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine having improved usability, such as operability or workability in a lint filter or charging a softener. SOLUTION: In the washing machine, an electromagnetic drive device (brake release device) is operated after a predetermined time from a time when power is turned on to perform a brake release process for rotating a washing/spin-drying tub 4. Therefore, even if the lint filter 13 or an automatic softener device 21 is concealed on the back side 17b of an opening 17a of an upper frame body 17, the washing/spin-drying tub 4 is allowed to be easily rotated without requiring force, and workability or operability in cleaning a lint filter 13 or charging the softener is improved by one button operation of only turning on the power source, so that usability is improved.
