PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biaxially oriented polyester film, which not only excels in resistance to pinhole by flexure, an important characteristic as a packaging material, but also excels in resistance to pinhole by thrust because the balance of the physical properties of the film longitudinal direction and the width direction is excellent and excels in the gas barrier property when a metallic compound is vapor-deposited. SOLUTION: The biaxially oriented polyester film for packaging is a biaxially oriented film composed mainly of a polyethylene terephthalate, has a plane orientation coefficient of 0.168-0.172, an absolute value of birefringence of <5, a thermal shrinkage factor of 0.5-2% at 150°C in the film width direction, and a film thickness of 7-20μm.
