PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte for an electrochemical capacitor capable of remarkably suppressing the decline of a capacity and the increase of internal resistance over a long period of time. SOLUTION: The nonaqueous electrolyte for the electrochemical capacitor contains a compound expressed by a formula (1) in an electrolytic solution dissolved in a nonaqueous solvent containing the electrolyte of quaternary onium salt. In the formula (1), R is R<SP>1</SP>or R<SP>2</SP>. When R is R<SP>1</SP>; R<SP>1</SP>is a halogen atom, M is a boron atom or a phosphorous atom, and n is 2 or 4. When R is R<SP>2</SP>; R<SP>2</SP>is a formula (a), (b) or (c), M is a boron atom or P=O, n is 1, and R<SP>2</SP>has an annular structure including M. A indicates a quaternary onium ion.
