PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform non-character edge processing on characters on a yellow background and to perform non-edge character processing on characters on dots of the background while improving reproduction image quality of a character and around it, reducing erroneous processing around the edge of a character on a pale color background or newspapers, and improving accuracy in the detection of massed edges. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus comprises: white background detection means (323a-323d) for detecting a low-density area in an image and black background detection means (323e, 323f) for detecting a high-density area therein; a white area detection means 1(323) including a white area determination and white correction means 323g for detecting a boundary area of the low-density area and high-density area and defining the boundary area as a white area; a white block correction and white area detection means 2 (323g) for detecting an area surrounded with the low-density area and also defining the area as a white area; and a non-character edge determination means 326a for defining an area that is not detected as a white area by the white area detection means 1 or the white area detection means 2, as a non-character edge area.
