[Also in Division E2] The wing 1 of a swing wing aircraft pivots about a vertical axis 3 in a bearing comprising two parallel horizontal members 11, 12 displaced along the axis 3 extending from the wing structure, each member 11, 12 being sandwiched between two parallel horizontal members 23 . . . 26 extending from the aircraft fuselage structure (or a stub wing 2). There may be bearing layers 51 coated with low friction plastics at the horizontal interfaces 53 between members 11, 12 and 23 . . . 26, to transmit vertical forces; horizontal forces being transmitted by a cylindrical interface between the members 11, 12 and discs 41, 42 secured by bolts 4 to the members 23 . . . 26. Also interconnecting the layers 51 and the discs 41, 42 are pins or screws 45, thus enabling the wing 1 to be removed after removing only the bolts 4 without having to dismantle the bearing further. |
