METHOD OF CODING

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a code amount caused by motion vector information.

SOLUTION: A motion compensation part 60 calculates a reference motion vector with a front reference frame as reference about each macro block in a back reference frame, and stores it in a motion vector holding part 62. A block matching part 61 specifies a block being an object of motion compensation prediction in a coding object frame by block matching with the macro block in the back reference frame. A motion vector calculation part 63 obtains a coding object motion vector with the front reference frame as reference to each specified block. A ratio calculation part 64 obtains a ratio of a component of the coding object motion vector and that of the reference movement vector. A movement mode selection part 66 analyzes the ratio and selects a movement mode of estimating the movement situation of each block between a plurality of coding object frames. The movement mode is outputted to a variable length coding part 90 to be coded.
