PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for driving a lamp of a liquid crystal display device that can apply a scanning backlight driving method thereto, in a liquid crystal display device using an external electrode fluorescent lamp. SOLUTION: This lamp driving apparatus of a liquid crystal display device includes: a plurality of lamps 31 irradiating light to a liquid crystal display panel; a plurality of external electrodes 32 individually arranged in the plurality of lamps 31; a common electrode 33 connected to the plurality of external electrodes 32 for supplying a tube current to each of the plurality of lamps 31; a plurality of auxiliary electrodes 35 that are detachable from and movable with respect to the plurality of external electrodes 32; and an auxiliary electrode driving part 37 sequentially connecting and disconnecting the plurality of auxiliary electrodes 35 with/from the external electrodes 32 in conjunction with a scan direction of data to be displayed on the liquid crystal display panel.
