PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of further excellently mixing fuel and air in ordinary combustion by further excellently forming premixed air in premixed combustion when an injection angle of the fuel in the ordinary combustion is the same as an injection angle of the fuel when injecting the fuel for forming the premixed air in the premixed combustion. SOLUTION: This compression ignition internal combustion engine has a piston 1 of recessing a cavity 4 on a top surface and a fuel injection nozzle 5, and switches the ordinary combustion and the premixed combustion. The fuel injection nozzle 5 injects the fuel at the same injection angleθin both the ordinary combustion and the premixed combustion. The cavity 4 has a first recessed part 42 for colliding the injecting fuel in the ordinary combustion and a second recessed part 43 formed by recessing an opening edge part of the first recessed part 42 and colliding the injecting fuel for forming the premixed air in the premixed combustion.
