PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damping brace structure, which absorbs energy to damp vibrations when it is extended, suffers no buckling when it is compressed, and moreover is produced at low costs. SOLUTION: A vibration damping system 3 is provided, which comprises a viscoelastic body 6 provided between two binding boards 5, 5, and a wedge 7 provided between the viscoelastic body 6 and one binding board 5. When the brace 2 is pulled, the wedge 7 advances between the viscoelastic body 6 and the binding board 5, the viscoelastic body 6 receives shear deformation, and at the same time, the wedge 7 and the binding board 5, and also the viscoelastic body 6 and the binding board 5 push each other to resist the tension by their frictional forces. When compressive forces act on the brace 2, the wedge 7 retires between the viscoelastic body 6 and the binding board 5, and the wedge 7 and the binding board 5 and/or the viscoelastic body 6 and the binding board 5 slide in the brace axial direction to shorten the brace 2.
