A metathesis process for preparing butyl rubber polymers having lower molecular weight than that found in commercial grades while maintaining the level of unsaturation and maintaining or reducing the polydispersity index of the unmodified polymer. Such a modification was made possible by the use of a novel high isoprene butyl rubber and a second generation Grubs catalyst.
