<p>A polycaproamide is stabilized against ageing by a content of copper in the form of metallic copper or a copper compound and at least one aryl sulphonic acid free of chromophoric groups, or a derivative hydrolysable thereto, said composition containing at least three molecular proportions of the sulphonic compound per atomic proportion of copper. Specified copper compounds are the butylate, citrate, lactate, oleate, oxalate, stearate, tartrate, benzoate, salicylate, p-toluene sulphonate, phenol sulphonate and cupric chloride. Other antioxidants, e.g. diarylamine-ketone reaction products, alkylated diphenylamines, diaryl-p-phenylene diamines and alkylated aryl phosphites may also be used. The aryl sulphonic acid may be employed in the form of an amide or ester. Copolymers containing S -caprolactam residues may be employed. In the examples, S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of distilled water and:- (I) and (II) p-toluene sulphonic acid and cupric phosphate trihydrate; (III), (VI) and (VIII) p-toluene sulphonic acid and cupric potassium chloride trihydrate and in (VIII) only N:N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine and a reaction product of formaldehyde with a reaction product of acetone and diphenylamine; (IV), (V), (VII) and (IX) p-toluene sulphonic acid and cupric chloride dihydrate and in (IX) p only the additional antioxidant disclosed in (VIII); (X) to (XVII) cupric chloride dihydrate and (X) benzene sulphonic acid; (XI) sodium p-chlorobenzene sulphonate; (XII) p-amino benzene sulphonic acid; (XIII) 3-amino-4-hydroxy benzene sulphonic acid; (XIV) the disodium salt of aniline-2:5-disulphonic acid; (XV) 1-naphthylamine-4:7-disulphonic acid; (XVI) 2:5-dimethyl benzene sulphonic acid and (XVII) naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid.
