The method involves separately applying Reed Solomon forward error correction code words to header and useful data of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell, to encode the header and the useful data. The encoded header (21) is interleaved with encoded useful data (20). The encoded header and the useful data are encapsulated in a transmission frame dedicated to the cell. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus adapted for reinforcing asynchronous transfer mode cells.
