PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly elastic rubber composition that contains a novolac phenol-based resin, and a method for producing the rubber composition. SOLUTION: The method comprises blending a rubber composition which comprises 100 pts. by mass of a rubber component containing mainly a diene base rubber, 30-100 pts. by mass of carbon black, a novolac phenol-based resin and a resin curing agent that is a methylene donor, wherein (1) at a stage after the carbon black is added, the novolac phenol-based resin is added followed by controlling the rubber composition to have a maximum attainable temperature of not higher than the softening point of the novolac phenol-base resin +20°C, or (2) at a stage after the kneading stage where the carbon black is added, the novolac phenol-based resin is added followed by controlling the rubber composition to have a maximum attainable temperature of not higher than the temperature at which the resin curing agent starts deteriorating.
