Electro-deposited coatings of precious metals (Ag, Au, Pt, Rh, Pd, Ir, Ru or Os) are removed from their substrates (e.g. brass bronze, copper, aluminium or steel) by treating the coated article with a fluid metal solvent (Pb, Zn, Hg, Sn, Bi, Cd, Sb or alloys thereof) at a temperature below the melting point of the precious metal and of the substrate, the precious metal then being recovered from the solution by standard techniques. Fluid Pb and Zn may also be used to dissolve precious metals contained in ores. |
