Determining the oil consumption of an internal combustion engine comprises determining the sulfur dioxide content of the engine's exhaust gas by ion-molecule reaction mass spectrometry. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for determining oil consumption, in which the content of an analyte in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine can be determined by ion-molecule reaction mass spectrometry, comprising means for determining the sulfur dioxide content of the exhaust gas.
