PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent large deterioration of exhaust emission and startability at a time of start due to large drop of control accuracy of air fuel ratio at the time of start caused by response delay of a variable valve system. SOLUTION: Determination timing of fuel injection quantity of a first time at start is determined based on a flag fSTINJEND. A target at the time of start is established to actual open characteristics vREVEL at the time to retain open characteristics during start after that if the open characteristics vREVEL of an intake valve does not reach a target vTGVELST at the time of start at the determination timing. Fuel injection quantity at the tim of start is corrected according to deviation between the retained open characteristics and the target at the time of start if open characteristics is retained to open characteristics before reaching the target at the time of start.
