PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic lock extremely low in cost, having many kinds, dispensing with consumable items such as a battery for a key, resistant to environment of water or the like, and difficult for others to copy. SOLUTION: The electronic lock is provided with the key 1E and a magnetic detector 2B. The key 1E comprises a nonmagnetic knob 11 and a shaft 13, and a plurality of (five) magnets 10 are embedded in the shaft 13. The magnetic detector 2B is formed by mounting magnetic detecting elements corresponding to the respective magnets 10, to a printed board 21, and disposed within a case 40 having a keyhole 41 for inserting the key 1E. The electronic lock discriminates the magnetic presence and magnetic pole of the key 1E based on a signal from the magnetic detector 2B, and determines the correctness of the key 1E by a combination of a magnetic presence signal and a magnetic pole discrimination signal.
