PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition having good coating workability and good finish and suited for forming a coating film excellent in adhesion, water resistance, and water adhesion resistance. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises (A) a water-based acrylic resin obtained by copolymerizing (a) 0.1 to 10 wt.% phospho-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer represented by formula (1), (b) 1 to 50 wt.% 6C or higher linear or branched hydrocarbon group containing polymerizable monomer, (c) 1 to 40 wt.% hydroxyl-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer, (d) 0.1 to 15 wt.% carboxyl-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer, and (e) 0 to 97.8 wt.% other polymerizable unsaturated monomers in the presence of a polymerization initiator in a hydrophilic organic solvent and (B) a water-based urethane resin, wherein the mixing ratio of resin (A) to resin (B) is in the range of 1/99 to 50/50 in terms of a resin (A)/resin (B) solid content ratio.
