A suction assembly removes sediment from the base of a settlement basin. The assembly has a sledge linked to a reversible winch. The sledge is pulled back and forth by the winch and has a suction hose linked to a pump. The winch system is formed by two trucks moving slowly in parallel either side of the basin and drawing the suction hose over the basin floor. The hose removes sludge or sediment to a disposal point on land.
