Self-deploying catheter assembly

A self-deploying catheter assembly (10) comprises an anchoring device (32) mounted to a tube (14). A distal end (26) of the anchoring device (32) is held in a fixed position by a releasable suture (34) while a proximal end (28) is freely movable between a proximal position and a distal position defined by a stop (23) on the tube (14). During insertion into a body cavity, the anchor (32) automatically maintains a low-profile state with the ends spaced apart. Once fully inserted, the anchor (32) self converts into a high-profile state when the tube (14) is slightly withdrawn, bringing the ends (26, 28) closer together. The suture (34) is disengaged to release the distal end (26) of the anchor (32) in order to facilitate a low-profile state for withdrawal of the assembly (10).
