<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the reliability of a sample by properly water-cooling the sample. <P>SOLUTION: The sample S is extracted from rolled stock Y passed through a hot rolling process. Cooling water R with which a cooling tank 30 is filled up is set to a temperature at which film boiling by which a steam film is formed on the surface of the sample occurs when the water is brought into contact with the sample S. After the sample S is water-cooled to a prescribed temperature by dipping it into the cooling tank 30, it is taken out and its dimensions is measured.
