PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface light emitting laser element and a surface light emitting laser array that can have sufficient light emission intensity. SOLUTION: A unit element comprises an n-GaN substrate 13 and one or two distributed Bragg reflecting films (DBR 17) as an epitaxial multi-layered film layer. The DBR 17 comprises one layer principally composed of a material having a composition of Al<SB>X</SB>Ga<SB>Y</SB>In<SB>1-X-Y</SB>N (where 0≤X≤1, 0≤Y≤1, and 0≤X+Y≤1), and the other layer principally composed of a material having a composition of Al<SB>Z</SB>Ga<SB>W</SB>In<SB>1-Z-W</SB>N (where 0≤Z≤1, 0≤W≤1, and 0≤Z+W≤1) different from the one layer.
