PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of protecting a PWM cycloconverter which enables stoppage, before the value of a current flowing to an inductive load becomes such a large value, and which enables it to stop safely, without increasing the capacitance of a snubber capacitor. SOLUTION: In the protection method for a PWM cycloconverter which detects 6 the current flowing to the inductive load 5 and switches off 13 all bidirectional switches 3, when the detected value becomes a set value 12 or over, it is arranged so that these set values can be changed over to any of plural values, depending on the operating state of the PWM cycloconverter, whereby the protection of the PWM cycloconverter, which only has small capacitance in its main circuit, is further secured.
