An energy management system in a motor vehicle contains: a battery that supplies current to a control device; a battery monitoring device, which is coupled to the battery while serving to determine a charged state of the battery, and; a quiescent current manager that, according to the charged state of the battery, sends an instruction to the control device for controlling a consumer connected to the control device. In response to this instruction, the control device sends a return message to the quiescent current manager that is characteristic of a state of the control device.
