A beam scanner scans the laser beam directed towards the workpiece. A controller calculates the unknown parameter matrix (X) for optimally determining the command value sent to the beam scanner, for directing the laser beam to the target position on the workpiece by calculating the weight matrix in accordance with the distance between the coordinates of current position and target position. An independent claim is also included for laser beam positioning apparatus.
