PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus displaying an image without white saturation and without degrading of contrast in a low luminance portion, even if brightness in surroundings is changed. SOLUTION: When using a plasma display panel (PDP) as a display apparatus 5, the image without white saturation and without degrading of the contrast in the low luminance portion is displayed by raising the contrast of the low luminance portion of the image displayed on a screen when brightness in surroundings is changed. The problem wherein a whole screen image is darkened when the contrast of the low luminance portion is raised, is solved by raising brightness. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
