PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device for liquid crystal display which can illuminate liquid crystal display elements with low power consumption and with high luminance. SOLUTION: The backlight comprises a vacuum-sealed tube 7, an anode section 8 with phosphor installed within this vacuum sealed tube 7, and a linear cathode section 9 facing this anode section 8 with phosphor. The linear cathode part 9 comprises a linearly extending conductive wire 16 and a field electron emission section 18, comprising a carbon-base film formed on the outer peripheral surface of this wiring 16. By a DC power supply, a pulse or ripple-like voltage for electron emission is applied periodically between the anode section 8 with phosphor and the linear cathode part 9.
