PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device for two lamps capable of easily lighting lamps nearly identical in rated lamp current but different in rated lamp power with one lighting device. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is composed of a resonance circuit 2 including an inductor L1 and a capacitor C1 to which high-frequency voltage output from an inverter circuit 1 is impressed, a balancer B composed of a first winding serially connected to a first discharge lamp Lpa and a second winding serially connected to a second discharge lamp Lpb, balancing lamp current flowing through the respective discharge lamps Lpa, Lpb, and an inverter control circuit 3 controlling switching operation of switching elements Q1, Q2 of the inverter circuit 1. Operation frequency fe of the switching elements Q1, Q2 of the inverter circuit 1 when the discharge lamps Lpa, Lpb are lighted fulfills a relation; fo≤fe (preferably fo≈fe), wherein, resonant frequency of the inductor L1 and the capacitor C1 constituting the resonance circuit 2 is fo.
