PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To pressurize an oil chamber for hydraulic oil inside a damper cylinder while reducing the overall length and outer diameter of a hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: In this hydraulic shock absorber 10, an annular oil chamber 54 communicating with the oil chamber 12 inside the damper cylinder 11 is formed in a cylindrical mounting member 16 fixed to the base end part of the damper cylinder 11, and the outer end part of a free piston 55 sealing the annular oil chamber 54 is directly opened into the outside atmosphere. Also, the free piston 55 is energized to the inside of the annular oil chamber 54 by a coiled spring 20 to always pressurize the oil chamber 12 inside the damper cylinder 11.
