Disclosed is a fuel cell system wherein oxidation deterioration of an anode of a fuel cell is suppressed when the operation is stopped. Specifically disclosed is a fuel cell system (39) comprising a fuel cell (1) which generates electric power by using hydrogen in a fuel gas supplied to an anode (1a) and oxygen in an oxidant gas supplied to a cathode (1c), and a combustor (4) for combusting a combustible gas. In this fuel cell system (39), the cathode (1c) is filled with the combustible gas and holds the gas therein after the power generation is stopped, and when the combustible gas is discharged from the cathode (1c) afterward, the combustible gas is burned by the combustor (4).
