The present invention provides a method for promoting the formation of mineralized tissue in a vertebrate, the method comprising administering to the vertebrate an effective amount of one or more of the following: an S100A8 polypeptide; an S100A9 polypeptide; a polynucleotide encoding S100A8 operably linked to a promoter; or a polynucleotide encoding S100A9 operably linked to a promoter. The present invention also provides a method for the treatment or prevention of a bone disorder in a vertebrate, the method comprising administering to the vertebrate an effective amount of one or more of the following: an S100A8 polypeptide; an S100A9 polypeptide; a polynucleotide encoding S100A8 operably linked to a promoter; or a polynucleotide encoding S100A9 operably linked to a promoter.
