The apparatus includes a first optical waveguide (3) along a track around which the first unit (1) moves. At least one optical coupler (4) is connected to the waveguide for coupling light into and out of the waveguide. A second optical coupler (5) is connected to the second unit (2) and is moveable relative to the waveguide for coupling light into and out of the waveguide. The apparatus also has a cleaning unit (40,41) for removing dirt and/or dust particles. Independent claims are also included for: 1) cover a method of cleaning the surface of a waveguide; 2) an apparatus with a seal for preventing entry of dust and dirt; 3) a method of sealing; 4) an apparatus and method for electrostatically removing dust and dirt.
