PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which enables high density recording and has excellent durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium comprises: a plurality of recording tracks 6 separately provided on a soft magnetic layer 4 formed on a non-magnetic substrate 2 and consisting of projecting ferromagnetic bodies; a protective film 10 covering the upper surfaces and the side surfaces of the recording tracks the bottom surfaces of recessed parts 8 provided between the recording tracks; and a packing part 12 provided on the protective film of the recessed parts so as to pack the recessed part between the recording tracks and consisting of a material having a composition different from the composition of the material of the protective film.
