PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a barium iodide hydrate powder which is especially suitable as a raw material for a rare earth-activated barium fluoroiodide-based photostimulable phosphor and which does not contain phosphorus substantially and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The barium iodide hydrate is expressed by the general formula; BaI<SB>2</SB>-nH<SB>2</SB>O (wherein, n is 1-2). The barium iodide hydrate powder contains phosphorus of 10 ppm or less.
