A method (300) for entering a character and character strings, into an electronic device (100) is provided. The method (300) includes displaying (320) groups of characters on a display screen (105) of the device (100), each one of the groups being displayed such that they have a visually distinctive representation compared to all other groups. Next, a selecting step (330) selects a chosen group from one of the groups in response to actuation of one of a set of user interface keys (106), each of the interface keys (106) being depicted in a manner that uniquely associates each one of the set of user interface keys with a respective one of the groups of characters.
