The invention relates to a side rail for a motor vehicle consisting of a front part (22) connectable to the cabin (14) of said vehicle by means of the rear part (24) thereof and means for controlling folding of said rear part (24) with respect to the front part (22) when said part (22) is longitudinally stroked. Said folding control means comprise a V-shaped rigid element (30) provided with two wings (32, 34) and a central section (36) projected with respect to the joint between the two wings (32, 34) of said rear part (24). The central section (36) extends with respect to said side rail (12) and is embodied in such a way that it draws with force said side rail (12) in order to fold the front part (22) with respect to the rear part (24) when the side rail (12) is longitudinally compressed.
