<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating an internal combustion engine having highly reliable and correctable NOx sensor signals supplied from a NOx sensor and a device for performing the method. <P>SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine, a NOx storage catalyst 14 is disposed in the exhaust area 13 of the internal combustion engine 10 and the NOx sensor 18 is disposed on the downstream side of the NOx storage catalyst, and the correctability of the NOx sensor signals NOxSnK supplied from the NOx sensor has a higher reliability. In the operating state of the NOx storage catalyst 14 in which the catalyst has no NOx storage capacity or has a very small NOx storage capacity, a scale NOxvK to an NOx concentration on the upstream side of the NOx storage catalyst is compared with the NOx sensor signals supplied from the NOx sensor disposed on the downstream side of the NOx storage catalyst.
