PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital recording/reproducing apparatus for down-converting video data, recording the resulting video data to a recording medium in the case of recording digital multiplex video data resulting from multiplexing sub data related to the video data (text data, still picture data, music data, and PC data or the like) onto the video data to the recording medium and down-converting the video data when the video data are copy inhibition video data and thereafter deleting only the original video data, and not deleting the sub data. SOLUTION: The digital multiplex video data resulting from multiplexing the sub data on the video data are once temporarily recorded on a recording medium, the digital multiplex video data are reproduced from the recording medium, and the sub data and the video data are separated. The video data are sequentially down-converted, the converted video data are again multiplexed on the separated sub code and the resulting data are recorded onto the recording medium. In the case of the video data whose copy is inhibited, after the operations above, only the video data being a source of re-encoding are deleted and only the sub data are left.
