PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp prevented from short life span arising from blackening due to spattering of the lamp, as well as being reduced in size and cost. SOLUTION: In the high-pressure discharge lamp which lights up by means of rectangular waves, the condition which prevents blackening due to sputtering of the high-pressure discharge lamp, as much as possible, is set, by setting the frequency and the current value of the lamp current at the starting as parameters.
